Melodies of Hope: Radio Host’s Journey to Mental Health Champion.

Nominate Your Local Community Mental Health Hero for the 2023 Australian Mental Health Prize

In a world where mental health is a growing concern, extraordinary individuals like Gary Thorpe are leading the way with innovative approaches to support vulnerable communities. Last year, Gary won the community hero category of the Australian Mental Health Prize and is now encouraging others in communities across Australia to nominate someone in their local area for this year’s prize.

Gary Thorpe’s story serves as a powerful example of the life-changing work being done in the mental health sector. Recognising the lack of engagement and stimulation for his neighbour Jean in an aged care facility, Gary established the radio station “Silver Memories.” Through the nostalgic power of music and shared memories, known as ‘reminiscence therapy’, he transformed the lives of countless elderly individuals, bringing joy, cognitive improvement, and social connection to nursing homes across Australia.

“Silver Memories radio is a powerful form of reminiscence therapy, where we harness the nostalgic power of carefully curated songs and conversations to transport our elderly Australians back to their youth. Through this journey down memory lane, we enable them to reminisce, evoke cherished memories, and forge meaningful connections with their past,” says Gary Thorpe, Founder of Silver Memories.

Gary emphasises the impact the Australian Mental Health Prize has had on his work: “Winning the Australian Mental Health Prize has elevated the profile of Silver Memories and allowed us to reach even more people in need. It has given us a platform to raise awareness about the importance of mental health support in our aging population.”

As the Australian Mental Health Prize opens nominations for 2023, communities across Australia are invited to shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes within their local region who are making a remarkable impact on mental health and well-being. This esteemed award seeks to honour individuals who have shown exceptional dedication, innovation, and leadership in improving mental health outcomes.

Professor Allan Fels AO, Co-chair of the Australian Mental Health Prize advisory group, emphasises the significance of recognising these local heroes: “Their contributions are invaluable, and by acknowledging their efforts, we can inspire others and promote positive change in mental health support.”

From advocates who have tirelessly fought for better access to mental health services, to therapists who have developed ground-breaking therapies, to community leaders who have created safe spaces for those in need, there are countless individuals making a difference every day. Their work deserves recognition and appreciation.

By highlighting the achievements of these local heroes, communities can contribute to breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and inspire others to follow suit. Nominating a deserving individual not only celebrates their invaluable contribution but also provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and well-being in your community.

Categories include Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, lived experience, professional, and community hero. Nominations will be accepted until July 17 and the winner will be announced in late September.

Join us in celebrating these extraordinary individuals and their vital work in fostering mentally healthier communities. Together, we can create a brighter future for mental health in Australia.
