Urgent Appeal: Protect the Continuity of Croatian Studies at Macquarie University
Dear Prof Dowton,
I am writing with deep concern about the proposed changes to the foreign language teaching program at Macquarie University, particularly the proposed discontinuation of the Croatian language courses.
These proposed changes, if implemented, would deal an enormous blow to our community, especially at a time when we are celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Croatian Studies and the associated Croatian Foundation in Australia. This milestone underscores the importance of foreign language education, not only within the Croatian community but also in the broader Australian context.
Under the current setup, the Croatian government plays a vital role by providing substantial funding
to employ teachers for Croatian language courses at Macquarie. The looming question is whether this crucial support will persist if we were to relocate to another premises or adopt a different setup that may lead to the lapse of meaningful Croatian language in Australia.

The loss of the Croatian language program at Macquarie would be a significant setback, not just for
our community but for the broader Australian community. The unique cultural and linguistic
contributions that the Croatian language brings to the academic landscape are immeasurable. It is not merely a loss for the Croatian community; it is a loss for the multicultural fabric that makes Australia vibrant and diverse.
We urge you to reconsider the proposed displacement and changes in the foreign language teaching program. The continuity of Croatian Studies at Macquarie University is not just a matter of preserving our heritage but an investment in the rich tapestry of languages and cultures that make Australia unique. The consequences of discontinuing the Croatian language program extend beyond our immediate community; they reverberate throughout the broader Australian society.
Your support in retaining the Croatian language program is not just a commitment to our community
but a testament to the inclusive and multicultural values that Australia cherishes. We implore you to
act urgently to protect the cultural and educational legacy that the Croatian Studies program
represents.

Kind regards,
Stephen Asic
